Reading: Born to be Wild(e) …enriched with Whiskey tasting…*

28. November 2024 15:33

Andreas T. Sturm

Oscar Wilde was one of the most notorious and controversial authors in 19th-century Victorian Great Britain. With his ingenious aphorisms and his sharp-witted humor, the dandy harshly criticized society. By mocking strict moral standards, he saw an opportunity to expose double standards and hypocrisy. Moreover, the eccentric writer delves into the art of living, art, morality, and pleasure, all while holding a mirror to society, reflecting our deepest fears and aspirations. Wilde, however, could »resist everything, except temptation«, as his colorful biography shows. Andreas T. Sturm reads from his forthcoming Wilde book and takes you on a journey through the life of the flamboyant playwright, including passages from Wilde’s most famous works, such as The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Sturm will also discuss how social networks and media have become the modern “Picture of Dorian Gray”. Oscar Wilde’s philosophy of life is more relevant than ever, as 12 of his selected principles will demonstrate. After this illustrious evening about a literary genius who, throughout his life, lived »beyond his means, but below his standards«, you will be convinced that the motto “Born to be Wild(e)” predates the 1968 hit.
*A whiskey tasting will enhance this impression.

Andreas T. Sturm is a Member of the State Parliament of Baden-Wuerttemberg and an author of works such as Das Shakespeare-Prinzip and Shakespeare und die Entstehung des europäischen Geistes. The former teacher of English and Protestant Religion is specialized in the literature of William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde. He offers programs such as Dinner with Shakespeare or Born to be Wild(e).
