Nicola Pritchard-Pink

250 years ago this December, one of the greatest novelists in the English language was born in a quiet rural village in the south of England. Publishing just four novels during her lifetime (with two more published posthumously) her writing has managed to endure over generations, spawning screen adaptations, literary tourism, academic studies, and even fan fiction. But what was it about Jane Austen that has led to her widespread popularity and lasting legacy?

In this beautifully illustrated talk, Nicola Pritchard-Pink will share her extensive knowledge of Austen, tracing her life from her birth in Steventon, Hampshire through to her final days in Winchester. Discover what her life was like, the places she lived, where the Austens were in the social pecking order, and ultimately what made her writing so special. This talk will transport you to the heart of Regency England and whether you are a devoted Austen fan or curious about the woman behind the ever-popular novels, this talk promises to inspire and inform.

Nicola Pritchard-Pink has an extensive background in English social history during the long eighteenth century, spanning literature, landscapes, country houses, tourism, and women’s domestic music. She is the author of „Dibdin and Jane Austen: Musical Cultures of Gentry Women“ in Oxford University Press‘ 2018 book ‚Charles Dibdin and Late Georgian Culture’ which explores Austen’s use of Charles Dibdin’s songs in domestic performance.
She has wide-ranging experience of working in the heritage sector, from running a National Trust stately home with its priceless Georgian collection, to a busy county archives service. During her Masters in Eighteenth Century Studies at the University of Southampton she specialised in Jane Austen’s song collection, culminating in a sell-out lecture-recital in Hampshire. As a regular speaker at academic conferences she has presented papers on a broad range of Georgian social history topics across the UK, and is looking forward to speaking about Austen at several conferences during 2025 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the novelist’s birth. Besides, she is currently researching her book on Jane Austen’s experience of walking.
